Ukrainian flag on Russian monument for Poltava Battle. October 6, 2014. A group of patriots put Ukrainian flag on a monument in the center of Poltava. They have also added a banner that says "Glory to Ukraine - Glory to the heroes". That is famous phrase that became popular after the revolution on "Maydan" in KIev in 2013-2014 when the old president Yanukovich got kicked out of power and run away to Russia. That monument is a symbol of Russian Army glory. It's a reminder for the battle that happened on June 27, 1709 when Russian Army defeat Swedish Army. That battle is known now as "Poltava Battle". The monument was put in the center of the round city square in 1809. On top of 10 meters hight column there is golden eagle that holds lightnings and laurel wreath in its beak. The head of the eagle is turned to the direction of the location where Poltava Battle took place. In the last months anything related to Russia is not popular in Ukraine.
